Do you sometimes feel like crap and don’t know how to get out of it? Do you feel angry, ugly and constantly tired?

Well, I’m here to help!

I’m all about feeling good and I’ve found some super simple ways to pick me up when I’m just. Not. Feeling it.

Here’s my top-secret tips on feeling your best when you think you’re the worst.

They are not advertisements for any of the products or services - not one business here knows that I have written about them.

They are just my honest-to-goodness thoughts.

I hope they inspire you to try something new!

How I become a nicer, calmer and an all-round better human:

I meditate. I do it in the morning, at least 6 mornings a week (I sometimes forget on a weekend. Woops!)

I listen to guided meditations, as I haven’t learnt any mantra’s and I don’t like having to think about what I’m doing. They are only between 10 and 20 minutes long.

Everything people say about meditation is true. If you’re resisting it, this is usually a sign that it’s exactly what you need! Don’t beat yourself up about it though – you’ll start when you’re ready. Or not. It's alllll good!

Just know that it actually feels really nice, and it’s not scary or hard. And you feel super chilled after it. It’s like when you take that first sip of wine and you get a hit of relaxation and buzz of calm. Convinced yet?

The meditations I do are by Melissa Ambrosini. I have all 3 of her Meditation Series. My favourites are the ‘Mastering Your Mean Girl Meditations’ and 'Meditations by Melissa Series 2’

How I get energy and find it easier to love myself sick:

I try to have positive self-talk everyday, but I find it so much easier when I EXERCISE. Those endorphins get me thinking I’m the best thing around! If I’m feeling flat it’s the best pick me up. Being an ex-athlete, you’d think this comes naturally to me. I’m here to tell you it does NOT.

Hands-down, my favourite exercise of choice is Pilates. I go to Panacea in Norwood.  Catherine is an absolute legend - I cannot recommend her highly enough. There is only a max of 3 people in a class (I often get to do it 1-on-1!) and you never do the same class twice. NEVER. She tailors every session to you and your goals - whether you want to tone up, gain strength or heal an injury. She’s also pretty funny and will make it feel like you’re hanging out with a friend. It literally tricks me into exercising. I LOVE it!!

What I do:

Pilates x 3 week.

Cycle or RPM class at Goodlife- I aim for 4 a week, I realistically do 2. Haha!

How I get inspired:

I listen to podcasts! I work by myself which is actually pretty lonely, but podcasts trick me into thinking there’s someone else there with me. ( I think I like being tricked?) It’s like I’m listening in on someone else’s conversation. Creepy? Yes.

I also listen to podcasts when I have tasks I don’t want to complete, such as doing the dishes, cleaning the house or going for a run.

My favourites are all centred around being the best version of yourself. Here they are:

How I feel prettier:

Ok, so I’m all about loving ourselves exactly as we are. BUT, if there as one thing I would change about myself, it would to have tanned skin! Oh man, I love a sexy tan. So, when I want an instant pick me up, I book in for a spray tan.

The best I have ever had is from a salon I recently found near my house, Polished Beauty. Now, I’ve had A LOT of tans in my life and these are easily the best. They have a wash off one, which I’m usually sceptical of because they’re never ever as good as the normal 8 hour ones. But, I washed this one off after two hours and it was amazing. Beautiful colour, even, and Tom didn’t complain about the smell! Also, they give you sticky feet to stand on so you don’t get tan on the soles of your feet. It’s the little things, y’know.

If you’re not in Adelaide, look for a salon that uses Custom Tan. Shit’s good!

How I eat healthily:

I plan! Now, I’m all about full disclosure and not bullshitting you, so I have to admit that this has fallen by the wayside in recent weeks (just ask my jeans!) But this is what ALWAYS works for us.

On Sunday nights I sit down and plan our meals for the week. I try and choose recipes that make enough for lunch the next day.

The most meals I make are from Pete Evans' Paleo books. I’m not Paleo, but Tom and I tried it once and I almost died! It was not for me. But, Pete’s recipes were SO delicious, easy and healthy. You don’t have to buy into his ethos, but the dude can cook!

My favourite recipe books/websites are:

Pete Evans - We cook from One Pot Favourites (the Vegetarian Curry is next level!), Fast Food for Busy Families (the Fish and Chips is Tom's signature Dish!) and Going Paleo (the lamb meatballs are ridic!).

Lorna Jane, Nourish - Our all-time favourite recipe is the Chilli, Honey and Tamari Fish Bundles with Asian Greens. There will be a party in your mouth.

Bill Granger, Easy - The Goulash is the easiest stew you will ever make. The meat is so tender you won't need a knife.

The Healthy Chef - The Chilli Con Carne is easy, delicious and comforting! It's also cheap!

Jessica Sepel - Get around the Japanese-inspired Salmon. One of the quickest dishes you can make!

How I become more successful:

For the past 3 months I have implemented a morning routine. It’s the best thing ever. Even when I don’t feel like doing it, I do it. Sometimes I skip the exercise part if I’m really against the idea (see above) but I ALWAYS do the other bits. I’m pretty proud I’ve stuck to this, but it’s easy because it makes me FEEL SO GOOD.

Here's what I do:

My Gratitude Journal is from Kikki K. I’ve been trying something new, where on the left page I write what I am grateful for right now, and on the right page I write what I’m grateful for in 3 months time – as if it’s already happened. It makes me excited and is just another way to set goals and manifest! It’s super fun to think about all the awesome things that will happen in 3 months!

My Angel Cards are Mary Queen of Angels by Doreen Virtue. I ask the Angels what it is I should know and then pull a card. It has a message and a book with more details about what the message means. It’s crazy how you always pull the card that is just right for you. (I love a bit of woo woo!)

How I indulge:

With food and coffee!!!! I’m from a family who is obsessed with food. My Mum makes her own organic Sourdough Bread - it's the best I’ve ever had. And my sister makes the best food that has ever touched my lips. No exaggeration. She even makes her own almond croissants and hot cross buns (I can never eat a bought one again. They’re INSANE). She’s ridiculous.

Anyway, I’ve found a café whose food is on par with my sister. And luckily (or unluckily for those jeans I mentioned earlier) it’s right near my house.

Rustic Gourmet is the cutest little café where they make all of their food in-house. The cakes and pastries stare at me everyday – they will be some of the tastiest you’ve ever had. I try and stay on the healthy side so I buy the salads and frittata for lunches. You will actually want to eat salad it’s SO GOOD. They do the most delish breakfast and the coffee is fab too. Even better than that is the warm welcome you get from every staff member. They’re a dream.

I almost didn’t want to tell you about it because I feel like it’s Adelaide’s best kept secret.

How I feel instant happiness:

By hanging out with my boyfriend and dog. Awwwww. They’re the best. I can’t give you a link to them, but you can check out my Insty Stories. Or if you want to stalk Tom, he’s on Fox Sports News if you have Foxtel. He’s the smiley one with the sharp hair.

What you can do is surround yourself with people that make you feel good! Where they accept you exactly as you are, and will give you the little pick-me-up you're searching for.

And that’s it! My little round-up of pick-me-ups!

If you have any questions about the things I’ve mentioned, please let me know!

Also, I’d love to do a Q + A in the future so please send your questions or suggested topics through. They can be personal or professional. I’m an open book!

And as always, if you think someone else would benefit from this article, please share!

You’re really great.

Emily xx
